OUR RUG CLEANING PROCESS

Here is an overview of our 9-step cleaning process to ensure the best possible cleaning results!

Step 1

PICK-UP OR DROP-OFF

Your rugs can arrive at our cleaning facility in one of two ways. The most convenient way for many is to use our Old World Rugs pick-up & delivery service. For a small fee, we can help move furniture, provide round-trip transportation, and help get the rug (and pad!) put back down, just where you want it.

Alternatively, rugs can always be dropped off at our downtown San Luis Obispo location (1021 Broad Street, across from the Art Museum) free of charge.

Step 2

PRE-INSPECTION

The key to our success and your satisfaction of our work is in our pre-inspection process. All rugs are thoroughly pre-inspected with our custom reporting and photo documentation.

We will educate you on your rug's intricacies, fiber types, pre-existing conditions, and will answer any questions you may have about your rug.

Step 3

DRY SOIL REMOVAL

Up to 80% of all soil in a rug is dry soil. Shag rugs, woven rugs, and wool hand-knotted rugs are specifically designed to hide dry soil. We use several techniques to dust, agitate, and vacuum the front and back of your rug to ensure maximum removal of dry soil.

Step 4

DYE TEST FOR COLORFASTNESS

All rugs are tested for dye stability and are treated accordingly with a dye stabilizer to prevent and control any bleeding of the dyes. Using our cleaning methods can also remove previous color bleeding with our cleaning techniques!

Step 5

PRE-SPOTTING AND FRINGE TREATMENT

All rugs are treated individually depending on fiber type and soil level. Any problem areas or spots will be treated appropriately to increase chances of removal. The fringe is also pre-treated and gently tamped to ensure deep penetration for maximum soil removal while not tearing up the fibers.

Step 6

SOIL SUSPENSION AND SHAMPOO

Dependent upon the fiber type, soil level, wash type selected, and construction, we will use a range of steps including but not limited to:

  • Full Submersion Marination
  • Low Moisture Cleaning
  • Dry Cleaning
  • Rotary Pad Cleaning

Our restorative & decontamination cleanings involve flushing the rug through all layers of the rug, allowing complete removal of contaminants.

Step 7

RINSE & FRINGE CLEANING

All rugs will be thoroughly rinsed to ensure maximum soil and chemical removal using various methods. The fringe, if applicable, will then be pressure washed carefully and rinsed free of all soil and contaminants.

Step 8

DRYING

After fresh water rinses have been complete, we use specialized and revolutionary tooling to fully extract as much moisture as we can out of the rug leaving it lightly "damp" and not "sopping wet". Rugs are then dried flat on our customized drying tables (or hung) and powerful air movers assist in drying each rug as quickly as possible.

Step 9

FINAL DETAILING

Final fringe detailing will take place in the finishing stage. Fringe will be lightly extracted and groomed. While the rug is drying, the pile will be set by hand and it will be finished with the appropriate tools made specifically for your rug type. After the rug is completely dry, it will then be vacuumed and prepped for post inspecting and wrapping.

Step 10

FINAL INSPECTION AND CLIENT NOTIFICATION

Our cleaning specialists will give the rug a final inspection and approve it for pick-up or delivery. Upon delivery, we will set your rug on its pad just right and groom the fringe for you! We can apply protector and treat it for moth damage or moth infestation prevention if necessary. These applications assure you of the best protection possible against moths, re-soiling, and future stains. It WILL help extend the life of your rugs.

Step 11

PERMANENT STAIN AND UV PROTECTION

Originally designed to preserve the life of wool oriental rugs, MicroSeal offers permanent stain and UV protection for all fabrics. MicroSeal’s nanotechnology protection penetrates and seals the fabric without altering the look or feel of your favorite rugs. Microseal is CaliforniaVOC compliant, biodegradable, non-toxic and non-allergenic, ask us about applying this lifelong protector to your rugs with your cleaning order.

EXPERT RUG REPAIR SERVICE

We offer professional rug repair services to strengthen, secure, and rebuild or reweave damaged areas of your precious rugs.

FIXING FRINGE

The fringes are one of the weaker areas of the rug. Typically made of unsecured cotton or wool, they can become tattered, uneven, ripped, or fall out. We have several ways of repairing your fringes based on the rug type and condition of the fringe fibers.

PATCHING OR REWEAVING WEAK AREAS/HOLES

There are many reasons a rug could develop a weak area or a hole. If unaddressed, the damage will usually get worse over time with typical household use. We can repair the damaged areas or at least secure the weak areas so that they can stand up to normal everyday use.

FIXING EDGE BINDING AND CORNERS

The edges of most handmade rugs are wrapped in wool that can fray or break over time, often exposing structural elements of the rug underneath. Another weak spot on many rugs are the corners where edge binding meets the fringe. Whether the corners of your rug are coming apart, or the whole sections of edge binding are missing, we can fix it!
